Health Department considers making all businesses smoke-free.
The Randolph County Health Board has proposed a smoking ban in every business, restaurant and bar in the county.
The public hasn’t had a chance to comment on the proposed ban, but some people are already upset about it.
Some restaurants in Elkins are already smoke free, but others are not. The proposal is in the process of being reviewed by the county prosecutor and will go out after the new year for public comment.
Some restaurants like CJ Maggies have a smoking section. Others, like Beanders, allow smoking but don’t have a designated section.
If the smoking ban is approved it would mean an end to all smoking in businesses, restaurants and bars.
If the proposal is accepted, Randolph County would be the fourteenth county in the state to have a 100 percent ban on smoking.
The proposal will not be out for public comment until after the new year.
Upshur County currently has clean indoor air regulations that ban smoking in restaurants but not bars. Harrison County looked at a 100 percent ban in October, but has decided to table that idea.
