Smoking surveys go out to restaurants

Surveys about a possible smoking ban will be appearing at Corbin restaurants soon.
Distribution of surveys by members of the Corbin Community Coalition began Friday to the 30 restaurants operating within the city limits. Most restaurants should have them by the end of the week.
The surveys ask four yes/no response questions:
“Should smoking be banned in restaurants in the city of Corbin?
“Are you a smoker?
“If smoking was banned in the city of Corbin, would you be less likely to go to restaurants?
“Overall, do you think a smoking ban would benefit the Corbin community?”
Restaurant owners have been asked to hand out the anonymous survey cards to their customers.
During the Corbin Community Coalition’s Nov. 12 meeting, the organization placed “creating a smoke-free community” as its top priority for the upcoming year. To that end, members voted to create surveys about a possible indoor smoking ban and place them in restaurants inside the city limits.
The surveys are being conducted by CCC and do not reflect a restaurant owner’s support or objection of the proposed ban.
CCC Coordinator Leah Norvell suggested during the last meeting that CCC collect data from the surveys and speak during the February 2009 city commission meeting.
Back in February 2007, CCC members sent a letter to Mayor Willard McBurney asking the city commission to adopt an ordinance prohibiting smoking in public buildings and restaurants in the city. The city never took any action on the letter.
The Corbin Community Coalition’s goal is to strive for a drug-free community — including illegal drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Many of the group’s programs work through the schools to educate students.

Corbin Community Coalition Continues To Fight For Smoking Ban

Many communities across Eastern Kentucky have considered smoking bans and many have passed such a measure. But members of the Corbin Community Coalition say they’re not getting support from Corbin city leaders on a possible smoking ban there. They say while they’ve heard a lot of support and positive feedback from the community, they haven’t heard back from city leaders since they started pushing a ban about two months ago.

“This is a difficult issue, especially for those in elected office, but we’re asking them to make a decision on where they stand and let us know so we know where to proceed,” said Chris Hart with the Corbin Community Coalition.

The group says it wants to meet with Corbin’s mayor but it may have to try other avenues to get a ban. We were not able to reach Corbin’s mayor for comment.
