Restaurant owners in Northport will soon have a chance to make their voices heard about a possible smoking ordinance that would affect their business.

The public hearing is set for the July 23rd Northport City Council meeting. Right now, the proposed ordinance calls for smoking to be banned in all indoor areas of a restaurant, but would not affect Northport’s bars and lounges.

The councilman who sponsored the ordinance says it’s something folks in the community have been asking for, and he explains exactly who the ordinance would apply to.

“We define a restaurant as any food establishment whose food sales outweigh alcohol sales”, says Councilman William Tunnell. “If it’s the other way around, [it’s] a bar or a lounge, and the smoking ban would not impact [that] establishment.”

The ordinance is not set to come up for a vote until August, but it could be pushed back. If you have concerns about the proposed ordinance, Councilman Tunnel encourages you to contact him through Northport City Hall.
