Ohio Airport installing equipment to help smokers with lighter ban

The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is adding permanent cigarette lighters to its smoking areas to help smokers affected by new regulations prohibiting the devices.

Starting April 14, the Transportation Security Administration will add lighters to its list of prohibited items. That means butane, absorbed-fuel, electric-battery powered and novelty lighters carried by travelers on their person or in carry-on bags will be confiscated at security checkpoints.

The new rule is in response to a provision of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, signed into law Dec. 17.

To accommodate smokers, the airport will set up permanent lighters in the smoking areas located past security checkpoints, according to a news release.
