Rhode Island Senate passes bill fining companies for selling tobacco to minors

May 24, 2005

(AP) — Companies and delivery services would be penalized for selling tobacco to minors under a bill passed by the Senate last week.

The bill says all companies must receive a copy of a valid form of identification before processing any tobacco orders placed by mail, phone, fax or online.

The bill would also penalize delivery services, such as U-P-S, for delivering tobacco products to minors.

First time violators could be fined one-thousand dollars or five times the retail value of the cigarettes involved. The bill now moves to the House.
