November 2, 2006
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — Police said they confiscated almost 9,500 packs of contraband cigarettes at a pair of convenience stores in Wakefield.
Police said they found the cigarettes at South Kingstown Convenience Store and Wakefield Food Mart.
David Thomas of the state Division of Taxation said Mian Aslam owns both stores.
Authorities said there were fake tax stamps on the cigarette packs and that 47-year-old Aslam was going to sell the cigarettes and hold onto the state tax money — worth about $27,000.
Aslam faces two felony counts of forging stamps and several misdemeanor charges.
