Curry County approves tougher smoking ban

October 2, 2007

Curry County commissioners have approved a smoking ban that prohibits people from lighting up within 25 feet of any county-owned buildings.

The ordinance calls for a $100 fine for the first violation, $200 for a second violation within a year of the first and $500 for a third violation.

The commission decided to consider the measure since a new statewide smoking ban that took effect in June doesn’t address the distance in which smoking is permitted outside of buildings.

The state ban prohibits smoking in bars, restaurants, stores and most other indoor workplaces and public places, including buses, taxis and other public transportation.

The state law allows smoking outside, but not near doors or windows.
