Salon owner fined for letting cat in

A friendly cat has cost Chandler beauty salon owner Amy Karpovich $225.
That’s the fine she was ordered to pay Friday for letting “Misty” purr around her patrons.
Posters bearing Misty’s photos and support from customers at the Board of Cosmetology meeting in Tempe Friday morning didn’t dissuade board members from enforcing rules against having animals around customers and beauty chemicals in commercial salons.
They reduced the recommended $250 fine by $25, however.
Critters, said board executive director Sue Sansom, could scratch, bite and infect patrons and may be harmed by hair gel, nail polish remover and other beauty chemicals.
Karpovich wound up in the regulatory dog house because Misty was caught snoozing in a salon chair during a routine inspection in January. Karpovich said she’s keeping the cat out of the salon now but is considering a campaign to change the rule.
