People Ban: RI McCoy Stadium

Rhode Island McCoy Stadium R.I.

June 19, 2005

I took my husband to a Pawsox game today for Father’s Day, and I
sent the following letter to complain about the smoking
accommodations. To say the least it was humiliating. Not just for us
but for all of the smokers who sought out the smoking area? and were
herded and watched over by stadium guards. They were absolutely anal
with? their orders to keep us all within two parking spaces outlined
and marked “smoking area”! This was in two small unused parking lots
where the dumpsters and service vehicles were kept. Since McCoy
Stadium doesn’t have a web addy, that I could find , I sent the
following email directly to the Pawsox. I would suggest that as many
of you that can also send them a letter telling them that you too
are offended by their policy. If the officials don’t hear from you
they will continue with this discrimination!

To Whom it May Concern,
?
I attended a Pawsox game at McCoy Stadium on Sunday June 19, 2005.
My husband and I enjoyed your facilities except the discrimination
shown to smokers. Being herded into two small spaces outlined in
yellow and watched over by stadium staff was to say the least
humiliating. Why you would employ this extreme and degrading policy,
outdoors, is beyond anything that those who were subjected to it,
could image . No justification for this sort of treatment can be
reasonable. I can only guess that those who implemented this policy
must feel it is their right to single out patrons whose behavior
they do not approve of. Maybe you should just post signs at McCoy
Stadium that say “Smokers Not Welcome”.
?
Until your accommodations for your smoking patrons change, to? more
respectable and convenient treatment, we will not patronize your
games again. We will also post our experience on web sites that
promote fair and reasonable accommodations for smokers, so that
others can also decide for themselves whether to be subjected to the
degradation we felt when we legally chose to smoke. A different
approach for a designated smoking area would greatly improve your
image. For the time being your present policy only shows others
especially the “children” that it is acceptable to treat certain
people with distain. Those that promote these bans through
legislation have no regard for the people it effects, only their own
narrow views.
?
When you do change your policy it would be a public service to
announce it so that those who stay away from the games will then
return.
?
Regretfully,
Dissatisfied and former patron
