Carroll County in a huff over smoking ban

August 11, 2006

A ban on smoking in county buildings is causing a huff in Carroll County.

County commissioners say they’ve been talking about a ban for years. They recently introduced the rule to drive smokers from puffing away outside doorways, which created clouds of second hand smoke for people entering and leaving.

The new smoking ban applies to the entire 800-acre county complex, including the nursing home. One ban opponent, Ossipee legislator Harry Merrow, said the rule unfairly forces nursing home residents to quit smoking. He says unlike county employees, nursing home residents can’t retreat to their cars for a cigarette.

Some smoking ban opponents are so upset that have staged smoking protests in their cars.
