The American Cancer Society has approached the Laurel city council about joining several other cities in Mississippi in becoming officially smoke-free.
It’s a decision that council members are not in a rush to make. President George Carmichael says a ban on cigarette smoking in restaurants and other public places will be considered, but the council will have to research every avenue.
“We want to make sure we do an in-depth study, look at our economic impact, make sure we look at the quality of life, make sure we do all the studies we need to have,” he says.
Several restaurants in Laurel are already smoke-free.
