Geneva County Smoking Ban Goes Into Effect

June 5, 2007
One area community has now joined the growing ranks of Wiregrass towns banning smoking in public facilities.
This week, the Geneva City Council approved a smoking ban.
A series of fines are in place for those who light up in prohibited locations.
However, exceptions have been made for some restaurants. The owner of such an establishment must place a sign on the front door stating whether smoking is allowed, or not permitted.
The new ordinance will go into effect in mid-July.
Over recent months, both the Andalusia and Opp city councils approved similar smoking bans.

Opp Smoking Ban?

An Opp city councilman says it’s time for his hometown to ban smoking in food establishments.

One can still light-up after a meal at more than a third of the eating establishments in Opp, but on Monday night, the city council will consider imposing a smoking ban at all food establishments.

Fines will range from $100 dollars for the first offense, to $500 for repeated violations.

An informal survey conducted by area media in Opp indicated 70-percent of the residents supported a smoking ban.
