While many people were making preparations for New Year’s Eve parties last week, Peachtree City’s latest centenarian was gearing up for a party of her own.
Judy Meade celebrated her 100th birthday last week surrounded by family and friends at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Ann Garrard. Meade, whose birthday was Dec. 27, is the widow of Jim Meade, a member of the University of Maryland athletics Hall of Fame who contributed a lot of time to youth sports in the area and whose name appears on the athletic field on Rockaway Road in Peachtree City.
Bobby Garrard, 74, said he never imagined he’d be celebrating his mother’s 100th birthday, but then again, this mother hasn’t been like all the other mothers in her age group.
“At 50, she bought a speedboat and water skis because she wanted to learn to water-ski, and she did,” he said.
“That’s the kind of individual she was and is. She is still so hardheaded. That’s probably what has helped her live a long life.”
The spunky and talkative Meade, who still lives on her own, shared her words of wisdom:
Q: What has helped you live a long life?
A: I don’t take any medicine, I take an aspirin every day, and I have a glass of red wine every night. There really isn’t anything difficult about being 100.
Q: Your son, Bobby, said you also smoke cigarettes. Is that true?
A: Yes, it is. I’ve been smoking for years. Sometimes it’s one or two packs a day.
Q: What does your doctor have to say about your health habits?
A: I haven’t seen a doctor in years. I don’t believe in them. They haven’t done a darn thing for me.
Q: How do you spend your time during the day?
A: Television is the thing I live by. I like to keep up on local news, and I love to watch sports.
