News: France les entreprises jouent le jeu
Le d?cret instaurant l’interdiction de fumer sur les lieux de travail est bien respect? et accept?. Mais ses b?n?fices sur la sant? et la consommation de cigarettes sont nuls.

In a nutshell, people in France mostly comply with the ban (which does not – yet – apply to restaurants and bars), but the results on public health are nil (no reduction whatsoever in tobacco-related diseases).?
This is probably because statistics in France are more reliable than in Italy or Ireland, where they somehow mixed-up baseline and statistical average.? In addition, people in France buy as many cigarettes as ever, and if you add the (huge) amount of tobacco smuggling in border areas, it probably means that people actually smoke MORE.
Let us wait until they try to ban smoking in restaurants:? Either the Government relents, which makes political sense and allows restaurants to decide whether or not they will continue to allow smoking, or they go ahead with the ban, and the catering sector will suffer massive losses – more difficult to conceal in France than in some other countries.
Bottom line:? The issue is no longer public health, but simply demonstrating the bullying capacity of the anti-smoking lobby.
