Another Ban Failed: VT Winooski Private Clubs
Divided Winooski council nixes club smoking ban
?
January 20, 2005
WINOOSKI, Vt. It’s still O-K in Winooski to smoke in private clubs like the Veterans of Foreign Wars or Moose Lodge.
That’s the result of a two-two tie vote by the city council last night.
The mayor would normally break such a tie, but Mayor Clem Bissonnette recused himself, saying he is a member of two of the local clubs the ban would have affected.
Public taverns still are subject to a ban on smoking. Winooski voters supported that ban last year by a vote of 16-hundred and 46 to 872.

Winooski to discuss extension of smoking ban to private clubs
January 6, 2005
WINOOSKI – A public hearing will be held later this month on a plan to extend the city smoking ban to private clubs.
The proposed ban was formally introduced Monday to the City Council. The council could decide whether to enact the ordinance the night of the Jan. 18 hearing.
The council approved the smoking ban in public bars in the summer, a decision that was upheld by city voters in November. Tavern owners said an exemption for private clubs, such as the Moose or Regular Veterans Association, created an unfair competitive advantage.
Operators of two of the private clubs in Winooski, Regular Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars, have said war veterans deserve a refuge where they can socialize and smoke if they choose.
However, on Monday, City Councilor Benjamin Clark said he understands the desire to cater to veterans but he wants to make sure they are in a healthful environment. “This seems like a good way to honor our veterans, to prolong their lives,” he said.

VT:? Smoking Bans Again
Here come the Health Police again.
November 17, 2004
You can’t smoke in bars or restaurants in Burlington…Winooski…or New York State any more. The Health Police made sure of that. Light up and you’re a lawbreaker.
But making you a criminal in your local neighborhood tavern isn’t enough for the crusading anti-tobacco zealots. They won’t be happy until they protect you from yourself EVERYWHERE.
Both Burlington and Winooski want to extend the smoking ban to private clubs.
Join the VFW and light up a Lucky? Not a chance. It doesn’t matter if you got the habit in the service and still enjoy a smoke with other veterans. You can’t do that sort of thing here…….even if it IS your own club.
After all, you may have helped win The Big One. But you haven’t gone up against the wellness warriors on the city council.
We hope club members in Winooski and Burlington will fight…and win…just one more battle. They should make the anti-smoking zealots butt out.
That’s our opinion. What’s yours?

VT:? Winooski smoking ban to take effect immediately
WINOOSKI, Vt. The Winooski City Council is considering extending the just-approved ban on smoking in bars to private clubs.
On Tuesday city voters approved by almost two to one a smoking ban for bars that was approved by city officials earlier this year.
The smoking ban does not include private clubs such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars or the Loyal Order of Moose.
But city councilors are considering extending the ban to the private clubs.
