York turns down smoking ban

December 19, 2007

YORK – — Contrary to expectations, the York County Board of Supervisors defeated a measure Tuesday night asking the General Assembly to allow the county to ban smoking in restaurants.

By a 3-1 margin the supervisors voted down the resolution asking state lawmakers to “sponsor and/or support legislation that would authorize localities to prohibit smoking in restaurants through the adoption of local ordinances.”

Thomas Shepperd Jr., who represents District 5, was the only vote in support of the measure. Walter Zaremba, who represents District 1, was absent from the meeting.
