The Smoke Report: California Tobacco Tax Fails

Cigarette tax supporters call for recount

Backers of Proposition 29, which would have added a $1 tax to cigarettes, are not ready to throw in the towel.

According to The Sacramento Bee, they’re calling for a recount of the votes after the tax was narrowly defeated last month.

The measure was on the June 5 ballot, and although polls showed that the public initially favored the tax, support dwindled after tobacco interests spent $47 million on ads opposing the initiative. The measure failed by 27,000 votes.
