City to Mull Smoking Ban in Parking Garages
The City of Des Moines will discuss a ban on smoking in municipal parking garages.
“You can actually walk through it and smoke is on your clothing,” said Councilwoman Christine Hensley, who has proposed the ban this morning.
As company break rooms and smoking areas have been phased out, smokers have increasingly turned to the city’s eight parking garages for a quick smoke.
Smokers frequently congregate near the doors of skywalk entrances just inside the garages, where they create second-hand smoke.
Complaints are becoming frequent, Hensley said. She requested the city adopt an ordinance to halt the problem.
Mayor Frank Cownie is already on board. He has already stopped voting to renew tobacco licenses for area businesses.
The city’s parking committee will review the idea at Nov. 15th public meeting.
