People Ban: VT Campaign Issue

Douglas, Clavelle Differ On Smoking Ban

October 25, 2004
MONTPELIER, Vt. — A smoking ban for Vermont bars has become a campaign issue in the governor’s race.

Republican Gov. Jim Douglas and Democratic challenger Peter Clavelle, mayor of Burlington, held another TV debate Sunday night. They covered a lot of the same issues they have in previous meetings, but a question on smoking in bars brought up a new issue on which they disagree.

Clavelle said the state should step in and provide leadership by prohibiting smoking in bars statewide. Douglas said the state doesn’t have a role in the debate. He said it should be left to individuals and towns.
